must. see. silver lining.
Have been trying to find a way to see something good in this week of black (or red, more to the point) mourning. I just can't understand how blind so many people must be. A short line in Salon today sums it up for me: "Bush's moral masses apparently worry more about the sanctity of life in a petri dish than their economic self-interest."

Anyway, there's a lot of work to be done for Democrats in the red states. I am in a tiny drop of blue in a sea of red, but that at least gives me some hope.

We have a lot of work to do. Sigh.

Nail-biting time
Well, I've done all I could do for democracy in the United States. Ok, maybe I didn't do all I could do, but I did the very least I could do. I voted. For John F. Kerry, Joe Kernan, Joe Hogsett, Baron Hill, Mike Englert, Sophia Travis, Iris Kiesling, and anyone else on the Democratic ticket. I hope they all win.

The party of Republicans used to be one not entirely evil. There were many things about the party that I could get on board. Less government, less interference in private lives, fiscal conservation. Those things I could get behind. But, as it's been said more eloquently elsewhere, the Republican party has been hijacked by the extreme far religious right. The issues that divide Republicans and Democrats are now based more on religion than they are civic differences. Take abortion, gay marriage, and stem cell research. These are the trigger issues that more viscerally divide Republicans from Democrats than, say, smaller government.

And this is some scary shit. As Thomas Jefferson said, "There is not one redeeming feature in our superstition of Christianity. It has made one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites." He also said, "In every country and every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty."

This country, under George W., has been taken over by religious fundamentalists no better, honestly, than the Islamic fundamentalists that they hate and that hate us. The Shrub administration has no thought of understanding anyone, and the attitude of "You're either with us or against us" ought to terrify people so much that they rise up in revolution. It goes contrary to all that our founding fathers stood for, and I have no doubt that they would not approve of the hopefully outgoing administration.

So I'm waiting here anxiously, as are many people across the country, in the extreme hope that the general public has wised up, and will elect John Kerry as President.

Please God.
